Washington, DC Internships

Program Information

The DC internship program is designed to give undergraduate students, graduate students, and young professionals the opportunity to serve at IJM's headquarters. Interns participate in the ongoing work of protecting the rights of those subject to violent forms of oppression and human rights abuses.

IJM internships offer a unique opportunity for professional development and spiritual growth. The program benefits those who plan to pursue various career paths, including public relations, law, Christian ministry, law enforcement, public policy, business, social work or general non-profit or international work. The program offers interns an opportunity to investigate their individual gifts and develop new skills while working at IJM's corporate headquarters.

For many interns, the DC internship is a strategic step prior to attending graduate school or beginning a career. The positions are open to college and graduate students, recent college graduates, and young professionals in career transition.

Applicants must have completed at least 3 years of undergraduate study.

Christian Faith

IJM requires all interns to possess a mature orthodox Christian faith as defined by the Apostles' Creed.

Security Background Check

Candidates selected for an assignment are subject to a security background check.

DC Program Components

  • IJM|Orientation: The program begins with a required week of orientation held at IJM headquarters in Washington, D.C. Sessions are led by IJM's senior leadership and staff. During this time, attendees learn about IJM's history, spiritual foundations, corporate philosophies, legal and investigative strategies and current global operations.
  • Work Hours: This internship requires a 40-hour/week commitment, and DC interns work during IJM business hours from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm Monday - Friday. Interns have five personal days to use during their internship.
  • Mentoring: Each intern is partnered with an IJM staff member to meet with regularly throughout the internship. During these meetings, mentors offer career and spiritual advice, and help interns get the most out of the program.
  • Seminars: IJM offers regular seminars to further educate interns on topics such as resume and job interview strategies, public speaking, project management, spiritual growth, preparation for law or graduate schools, career guidance and more.
  • Prayer: IJM staff members and interns practice daily stillness to begin the work day, and join together daily for a corporate prayer time to empower and protect IJM team members around the world, as we intervene on behalf of the oppressed. Interns also join with IJM staff during a quarterly prayer retreat, a day when IJM pauses for extended prayer, reflection, fellowship and worship.
  • Other activities: Interns participate in IJM-sponsored social events, advocacy events (depending on availability), and have lunch sessions with IJM staff to discuss a variety of subjects regarding both personal and professional growth.

All internship positions are unpaid. We encourage applicants to view the internship as an opportunity to gain professional skills in preparation for their career or further studies. Funds may be raised to cover the cost of your travel to Washington D.C. and general monthly living expenses while interning with IJM if an interns permanent address is not in the Washington DC metro area.
